The movie "Centurion" is a 2010 American-British historical war film about the Roman Tenth Legion's attempts to defeat an army of 70,000 Picts in Scotland. It stars Michael Fassbender as Quintus Decius Cato and creates for audiences a powerful vision of ancient Rome as it experienced its greatest success and catastrophic fall. This startlingly ambitious epic tells the story of the rise and fall of Rome from Caesar's first triumph over Pompey on the battlefields to his assassination at Rome's hands, including battle scenes that recreate some of antiquity's most momentous encounters. Directed by Neil Marshall and scripted by Peter Hoskin, the screenplay is based on the book "The Eagle: The Roman Soldier and His equipment" by Adrian Goldsworthy. James Franco plays a Roman centurion named Cato, who is put to the test in a pivotal battle in the Roman campaign against an invading Pictish tribe. The critical reviews for Centurion have been mixed to negative. The film has a rating of 50% based on 16 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 4.9/10. On Metacritic, it holds a 44 out of 100 rating based on reviews from 14 critics indicating mixed or average reviews. Sam Adams from the New York Times said: "The problem here is that "Centurion" is a laborious exercise in history lesson, as if the filmmakers had been careful to be as historically accurate as possible (which they have), only to be left with a lot of empty time and not much story to tell." John Anderson from Variety wrote: "Ultimately, the movie's real flaw lies not in historical inaccuracies but rather in a stodgy narrative which feels both familiar and too self-important."Budget: $6 million. Production companies: Take 2 Pictures, StudioCanal International, Weta Digital, ImageMovers Digital. Distributor: Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Production companies: Ecosse Films, Lions Gate Entertainment. TV company: BBC Distributors: BBC Worldwide, Lionsgate UK (DVD & Blu-ray). The 5.1 channel soundtrack comes on a separate standard DVD or Blu-ray disc with the film. "Centurion" was released on DVD and Blu-ray on 7 August 2010 in the UK, and 25 August 2010 in the US. It grossed $445,082 in DVD sales. The film premiered on television channel AMC on 20 December 2014, its first US television broadcast. The movie was released onto Netflix shortly after its initial broadcast. The story is set in the 1st Century AD. According to this film, the Spanish territory of Baetica (Andalusia) was never occupied by the Romans, which contradicts mainstream historical accounts (see "Hispania (Roman province)#The Imperial era"). The implication that Caesar sent Agrippa to Britain is false; actually he was sent to Gaul. Moreover, the character of Cato is based on Marcus Porcius Cato, not his great-grandson Cato the Younger. cfa1e77820
